Known in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In Israel, it is a national memorial day. The City of Columbus has been observing this event for 24 years, as a means to honor the survivors and victims and to educate the community about the lessons of the Holocaust.

Gerda Weissmann Klein (born May 8, 1924 in Bielsko, Poland) is a Jewish Holocaust survivor. She has written several books about her experiences, and her story was made into a film, One Survivor Remembers, which won an Academy Award in 1995.
